Former Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero has backed his old club to bounce back and reclaim the Premier League crown this season.

Speaking to Stake ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, Aguero was confident that Pep Guardiola’s men have what it takes to dethrone Liverpool, who ended City’s four-year dominance last term under new boss Arne Slot.

City endured an unusually underwhelming season, finishing third, 13 points adrift of the champions. But the Etihad giants have moved swiftly in the transfer market, splashing around £150 million on Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki, James Trafford and Sverre Nypan.

When asked outright who he thought would lift the trophy, Aguero said: “Manchester City.” For his top-four prediction, the Argentine added: “Not in order, I think Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea.”

While City gear up for a title push, Tottenham Hotspur are entering a new era of leadership. Argentine defender Cristian Romero has been named club captain, replacing Son Heung-min. The decision, made by new Spurs manager Thomas Frank, reflects the Dane’s belief in Romero’s influence on and off the pitch.

Football insider Fabrizio Romano revealed that Frank saw Romero as a key figure from the moment he arrived. Reports linking the World Cup winner with a move to Atlético Madrid never progressed, with Romero fully committed to his future in North London.

Son, who succeeded Harry Kane as captain last season, has left Europe altogether, sealing a move to Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC. Tottenham reportedly received more than €15 million for the 32-year-old forward.

With City’s title hunt and Spurs’ leadership shake-up, the Premier League is shaping up for another season of high drama.
