Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, on Monday returned to a rousing welcome at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, following their record-breaking victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship.
Naija News reports that the Rena Wakama-led team arrived with the championship trophy in hand and was met by a jubilant crowd, including cultural dancers, drummers, basketball fans, and officials of the National Sports Commission.
Also present to receive the team were representatives from the Ministry of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy, as well as the Association of Nigerian Women in Sports.
From the airport, D’Tigress headed to the Presidential Villa, where President Bola Tinubu and First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, are scheduled to receive them formally.
President Tinubu had earlier congratulated the team in a statement, praising their “dedication, teamwork, and consistency on the continental stage.”
D’Tigress defeated Mali 78–64 in Sunday’s final at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The win not only secured the 2025 title but also marked Nigeria as the first country to win five consecutive Afrobasket championships, solidifying their dominance in African women’s basketball.
Meanwhile, Amy Okonkwo has been named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket following Nigeria’s dominant performance at the tournament in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
Okonkwo, 28, who plays forward for the Nigerian women’s basketball team becomes the second Nigerian to win back-to-back MVP awards at the competition, following Mfon Udoka’s achievements in 2003 and 2005.
